Hmmm, Global Warming....

topic posted Fri, April 21, 2006 - 3:40 PM by  Wendy
Watched a documentary last night that intrigued me. Suffice it to say not all scientists believe in Global Warming, but we won't debate that part.

All of our greenhouse gas emmissions in the US are being reduced. These gasses apparently have been forming a protective layer in the ozone. Although we are seeing rising temperatures around the globe, these temperatures are much less than they should be given our pollutants. A scientist was able to monitor the reaction of the air when virtually all flights in America were ceased for three whole days, and what he found was astounding.

This leads to a frightening question: If we continue to reduce our harmful chemicals into the air, and get other countries to follow suit, there will be a much faster increase in global temperature. So, what do we do now?

Do any of you work in a related field that could shed some insight into this concept??

yeah that was it! Thanks, I only came in on the middle of it so didn't get to see everything.

Do you have any thoughts on it?

It seems the dimming temperature effect was a valid theory. The worst case senerios talked about at the end seemed very scary. Climate science is such a complicated field. I doubt enough of the world will do much about it to make a difference until millions of non-African people start dying as a direct result of major climate change. Until then, turning things around might take generations. It's a scary thought. I hope they are wrong in their estimates but I think pure hope is all that we have right now.

          NO... NO... NO

Bush said there is no such thing as Global Warming, and i believe him !

.... now if you'll excuse me i'm having tea with Mother Goose and Spiderman in a bit and i have to freshen up.

Eh, this article comes to mind:

Sound reasoning, but its the enviormental unkowns that alarm me more though...

Mass distruction of entire ecosystems is sadly already happening.

I have long considered global warming due to fossil fuel emissions to be a given. What concerns me is the momentum of the whole thing. As it gets worse, the increases will accelerate; at what point will it be going too fast to do anything but crawl into a bunker?

Also, what is we are only seeing changes of a few degrees because the effect is being masked by a natural cooling cycle? In other words, what if Earth was supposed to be cooling down about now--part of it's natural billion-year cycle. But we come along and try to warm the place while it;s cooling down. The cooling effect cancels most of the warming effect...at first. But when the warming effect overtakes the natural cycle--then we have this slingshot effect. Now it's not just a degree or two worldwide, suddenly it's ten degrees a year and climbing.

It'll have to be catastrophic or no one will ever do anything about it. China, one of the largest polluters in the world, won't do anything because it'll threaten their upward mobility. The US & Europe have done a little, but will be slow to do more because the cost will make us less competetive initially (but whoever gets steady on alt fuels first will reap the rewards about the time the rest of us are just switching over.)

Imagine my plight...I am currently in several hard science courses in college. None of the scientists but one agree that global warming is actually occuring in the fashion it is currently portrayed. All of the political science teachers blame America for being responsible. And I can't seem to get a straight answer out of anyone other than

no doubt ....that's why we need to take a space elevator to a calmer more controlled environment....

Try keeping in mind that through most of Earth history there were no continental glaciers and the Earth was much warmer than today. The biosphere actually tends to thrive under warmer conditions. At the same time, don't buy any land in Florida or any coastline. Sea level could rise by as much as 300 feet if all the glaciers melt. This would put all these areas under water.

I think this is exactly what is happening. If one looks at recent Earth histroy, what we we see are glacial ages with short interglacials. We are currently in an interglacial period that started about 10,000 years ago. We should be already moving into the next glacial cycle, except something has kept the temperature relatively flat- most likely antropogenic influences. It is actually quite possible these influences have delayed the onset of glaciation which would certainly be more detrimental than global warming.

I think if people were responsible enough to have all the exhaust pipes not pointed at peoples legs it would help. Also, gasoline stations never cease to reek, as if there is no time to clean up and keep all the pumps absolutley clean. So, I assume perfecting existing systems will increase the value of clouds.....
